Why do you blog?
Hello, incredible women over 50! I’m here, heart wide open, ready to share. As a registered nurse with years of experience in floor nursing, hospice, and more, I’ve seen firsthand how transformative knowledge can be. My passion for teaching health and wellness, especially for women in our vibrant 50+ season, is what drives me to create this space. But let me back up and tell you how this all began.
When I had my hysterectomy—a complete, everything-must-go procedure—I was thrust into menopause overnight. Hot flashes turned me into a walking sauna, my emotions were a rollercoaster, and I found myself saying things to my family that just weren’t me. The physical and emotional changes hit hard, and honestly, I wasn’t prepared for them. As an RN, I thought I knew what to expect, but this was a whole new ballgame. I wondered how many women had been through the same thing.
Those changes got me thinking about the bigger picture. How do I stay healthy as my body naturally shifts with age? How do I keep joy front and center when my youngest is halfway through high school and my days of hands-on mothering are evolving? Can I still chase adventures like hiking or try stand-up paddleboarding, something I’ve always wanted to do? With my metabolism slowing down, will I ever feel confident in my body again? And what about medications—are they the only option, or are there natural alternatives, like the naturopathic approaches I’ve been exploring, such as acupuncture and herbal remedies? Most importantly, I realized how much the women in my life—my friends, daughters, sisters, nieces—mean to me. Their laughter, support, and love are my lifeline, and I want to celebrate them every chance I get.
Then it hit me: if I’m wrestling with these questions, other women over 50 probably are, too. As an RN, I’ve spent years teaching patients about health and diagnoses, from managing chronic conditions to understanding treatment options. I’ve worked in hospitals, ICUs, and hospice, guiding people through some of their toughest moments. That experience gives me the credentials and the heart to share reliable, practical health advice tailored to this stage of life. I saw this blog as the perfect platform to do just that—to educate and empower women over 50 about their health, from navigating menopausal symptoms to understanding diagnoses and exploring wellness strategies that work for us.
That’s why I started 50+ and Flourishing. This blog is a space to dive into the health topics that matter most to us—post-menopausal health, managing symptoms, nutrition, exercise, and even mental wellness practices like mindfulness. It’s a place to connect, share stories, and build a community where we can flourish together. Because our health, our questions, and our journeys are something worth sharing, and I feel as if I, myself , have something worth sharing with the world.
