I prefer to keep quiet about the acts of kindness I’ve had the privilege to perform. When I do something kind—when I go out of my way to brighten someone’s day—it brings joy not only to them but also to me. Talking about these moments feels like giving away the joy I gain from giving. So, I selfishly hold them close, tucking them away in my heart with a warm glow and a secret smile.
Hospice nursing offers countless opportunities for kindness, whether it’s lingering a little longer with a patient or their family or surprising a chocolate-loving patient with a cookie. In truth, my work feels like one continuous act of kindness—a blessing I’m fortunate enough to be paid for. If I had to name my random act of kindness, it would be choosing a career in nursing.
