Finding Joy in New Experiences at 55

Sometimes, I catch myself wondering if I’m too old to chase the adventures that still spark joy in my heart. My husband thinks 50 is the age to kick back on the porch and watch life pass by, but I’m just not ready for that. I want to keep moving, exploring, and soaking up every moment. Sure, my balance isn’t what it used to be, and I carry a few extra pounds, but those don’t dim my desire to live fully. They just remind me to be mindful as I choose my next adventure.

Last month, my family and I escaped to Petit Jean State Park in Arkansas, and it was wonderful. We hiked, canoed, rode horses, fished, and gathered around a campfire for s’mores, all while staying in a cozy yurt. Every moment felt like a gift, a chance to laugh and make memories with the people I love most.

We tackled the Cedar Falls Trail, a rugged path leading to a stunning waterfall. I’ll be honest—I was nervous. I’m not in the best shape, and the trail’s “moderately difficult” label loomed large in my mind. As a novice hiker, I knew I could handle some challenges, but this one pushed me. It took us 3½ hours to cover two miles, with plenty of stops to catch my breath. Near the end, an asthma attack slowed me down, but when I stood admiring the base of that roaring waterfall, surrounded by my family, I felt unstoppable. Exhausted, yes, but so proud and grateful to have shared that beauty with them.

Then there was horseback riding. The thought of climbing onto a horse at my age made me reconsider riding—what if I fell? But I pushed that fear aside, swung my leg over, and felt the thrill of the ride. When it was over, I was grinning ear to ear, my heart full of joy and a quiet sense of triumph.

For me, 55 isn’t a finish line; it’s a new chapter. I’m choosing to live it with courage, joy, and a heart open to new experiences. I’m daydreaming about trying stand-up paddleboarding. The idea of gliding across the water, feeling the breeze, and testing my balance excites me. It’s not about being perfect—it’s about showing up and embracing the adventure. What’s calling you to step out and try something new?

I hope my story inspires you to listen to that spark and go for it.
